Essays with limits, abstracts with caps, cover letters, video scripts, X posts — counting words is usually step one of publishing something that matters. Most online counters run analytics over what you paste; some autosave it. This one is a textarea and arithmetic: no storage, no transmission, no third-party spellcheck phoning home. How are words counted?
Anything separated by whitespace counts as a word — the same rule Word and Google Docs use, so the numbers match what your teacher, editor or application portal will see.
What are the reading and speaking times based on?
Reading time assumes ~200 words per minute (average adult silent reading); speaking time ~130 wpm (comfortable presentation pace). Handy for speeches, video scripts and "5-minute read" labels.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
No. The counter runs entirely in this tab — no autosave, no cloud, no spellcheck requests, no analytics on the content. Paste a confidential draft and close the tab; it is gone.
Does it handle character limits, like Twitter/X or meta descriptions?
Watch the Characters box: 280 for X posts, 150-160 for meta descriptions, 4,000 for many form fields. The no-spaces count covers systems that measure that way (some academic abstracts do).
How are sentences and paragraphs detected?
Sentences end at . ! ? or …; paragraphs are blocks separated by blank lines. Creative punctuation fools any counter — treat both as close estimates, words and characters as exact.
