Why convert AVIF to PNG?
AVIF offers the best compression of any mainstream format, but plenty of apps, editors and older systems still cannot open it. PNG keeps every pixel intact and supports transparency, ideal for graphics and editing.
When you actually need this
AVIF is new enough that plenty of desktop software cannot open it at all. PNG is the safest possible target: lossless, transparency intact, and readable by anything made in the last twenty years.
What it costs you
The size difference is dramatic. Our 79 KB test AVIF became a 1.7 MB PNG — over twenty times larger. That is AVIF being very good at compression, not PNG being broken.
What happens to the file size
On this site's own 1204×800 test image, 79 KB of AVIF became 1746 KB of PNG. That is 22.1× the original. Worth it when you need what PNG gives you, wasteful when you do not.

Why is the PNG twenty times bigger?
AVIF uses modern video-codec compression; PNG stores pixels losslessly with far simpler techniques. Both show the same picture. If the size matters more than editability, convert to JPG instead — the same test file came out at 191 KB.
Is it really private? Where do my AVIF files go?
Nowhere. The AVIF is decoded and re-encoded as PNG by your own browser, using WebAssembly — the same technology behind Photopea and Google's Squoosh. Load this page, switch off your internet, and the conversion still works. There is no upload step to opt out of, because there is no server to upload to.
Is there a file size or daily limit?
No. Your device does the work, so there is no bill for us to protect. The practical ceiling is your own memory: a batch of AVIF files converts fine, but very large images on an older phone can run out of room, and the tool will say so rather than fail silently.
