Why convert JPG to WebP?
JPG is the most widely supported image format ever, but its compression is dated. Modern formats pack the same quality into far fewer bytes. WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality — ideal for websites.
When you actually need this
You are putting photos on a site and want the page to load faster without re-shooting anything. WebP is the safe modern default: every current browser supports it.
What it costs you
Re-encoding an existing JPG is generational loss — the WebP is compressed from an already-compressed image, so artefacts from the first pass are baked in. Convert from the original whenever you still have it.
What happens to the file size
On this site's own 800×600 test image, 33 KB of JPG became 35 KB of WebP. Slightly larger, which is the cost of the format change rather than a fault. Drop the quality slider a little if size matters more than fidelity.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my WebP barely smaller than the JPG?
Because the JPG was already well compressed. Our test file went from 33 KB to 35 KB — slightly larger. WebP wins big against PNG and against high-quality JPGs, but a small, heavily compressed JPG has little left to squeeze. The tool tells you when this happens rather than quietly handing back a bigger file.
Is it really private? Where do my JPG files go?
Nowhere. The JPG is decoded and re-encoded as WebP by your own browser, using WebAssembly — the same technology behind Photopea and Google's Squoosh. Load this page, switch off your internet, and the conversion still works. There is no upload step to opt out of, because there is no server to upload to.
Is there a file size or daily limit?
No. Your device does the work, so there is no bill for us to protect. The practical ceiling is your own memory: a batch of JPG files converts fine, but very large images on an older phone can run out of room, and the tool will say so rather than fail silently.
