Why convert PNG to AVIF?
PNG is lossless and great for screenshots and graphics, but its files are heavy — often 5–10x larger than a modern format at the same visible quality. AVIF is the most efficient mainstream format today. It is roughly half the size of JPG at the same quality and works in 94% of browsers.
When you actually need this
When a PNG is going on a web page and nothing needs to edit it again, AVIF gives the smallest file of any format a browser can display.
What it costs you
The conversion is lossy and slow. Our test PNG encoded in about 1.3 seconds against 9 milliseconds for JPG. And AVIF is a display format: hand someone an .avif and there is a fair chance their software will not open it.
What happens to the file size
On this site's own 800×600 test image, 297 KB of PNG became 21 KB of AVIF. That is a 93 percent saving, and the picture looks the same at normal viewing size. Encoding took roughly 1.3 seconds per image on our test machine.

Does AVIF keep transparency?
Yes. Transparent areas survive the conversion, which is why AVIF is a real replacement for PNG on the web rather than just for JPG. Our test file dropped from 297 KB to 21 KB, a 93 percent saving.
Is it really private? Where do my PNG files go?
Nowhere. The PNG is decoded and re-encoded as AVIF by your own browser, using WebAssembly — the same technology behind Photopea and Google's Squoosh. Load this page, switch off your internet, and the conversion still works. There is no upload step to opt out of, because there is no server to upload to.
Is there a file size or daily limit?
No. Your device does the work, so there is no bill for us to protect. The practical ceiling is your own memory: a batch of PNG files converts fine, but very large images on an older phone can run out of room, and the tool will say so rather than fail silently.
