Why convert BMP to PNG?
BMP is the ancient uncompressed Windows bitmap format. It opens fine, but files are enormous — often 20-50x larger than the same image compressed. PNG keeps every pixel intact and supports transparency, ideal for graphics and editing.
When you actually need this
The right conversion when the BMP must stay pixel-exact: PNG is also lossless, so nothing changes, but the file is a fraction of the size. Ideal for archiving old scans, diagrams and screen captures.
What it costs you
Still much bigger than a JPG of the same image, because lossless compression can only do so much. If exactness does not matter, JPG will be far smaller.
What happens to the file size
On this site's own 800×600 test image, 1406 KB of BMP became 304 KB of PNG. That is a 78 percent saving, and the picture looks the same at normal viewing size.

Is anything lost converting BMP to PNG?
Nothing. Both formats are lossless, so every pixel is identical — PNG simply stores them more cleverly. Our test file dropped from 1.4 MB to 304 KB, a 78 percent saving with a byte-for-byte identical image.
Is it really private? Where do my BMP files go?
Nowhere. The BMP is decoded and re-encoded as PNG by your own browser, using WebAssembly — the same technology behind Photopea and Google's Squoosh. Load this page, switch off your internet, and the conversion still works. There is no upload step to opt out of, because there is no server to upload to.
Is there a file size or daily limit?
No. Your device does the work, so there is no bill for us to protect. The practical ceiling is your own memory: a batch of BMP files converts fine, but very large images on an older phone can run out of room, and the tool will say so rather than fail silently.
