GIF compression is actually three understandable decisions: how many colors the palette keeps, how many frames play per second, and how large the pixels are. Exposing them means a designer can protect gradients while a meme poster goes full 32-color chaos. Either way the palette is regenerated per file, on your device.

How does GIF compression work?
Three levers: fewer palette colors (GIF stores at most 256), fewer frames per second, and smaller dimensions. This tool exposes all three so you decide the tradeoff instead of a black box deciding for you.
Which settings should I start with?
128 colors at original speed and size is usually invisible and already cuts a chunk. For chat-sized results, add 75% scale. 32 colors is the meme-quality tier: tiny files, visible dithering.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser via WebAssembly FFmpeg with a regenerated optimal palette. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Why did the file not shrink much?
If the GIF already uses few colors and small dimensions, the remaining lever is frame rate: try 8 fps. Video-derived GIFs with thousands of colors shrink the most.
