Why 512 KB?
The Discord sticker limit and a common forum-attachment ceiling. Half a megabyte holds a short, sharp loop when the palette is regenerated properly.

Frequently asked questions
Why did my file come out well under 512 KB?
The ladder stops at the first quality step that fits, and steps are coarse. A GIF that almost fits at high quality can drop comfortably below the target at the next step.
Does compression change my GIF’s dimensions?
Only if the gentler steps are not enough: the ladder tries fewer colors and lower frame rate first, and scales the image down only as a last resort.
Is my GIF uploaded to compress it?
No. The re-encode runs in your browser through WebAssembly FFmpeg with a regenerated optimal palette. Nothing is sent anywhere.
How does the tool get under 512 KB?
It walks a quality ladder — fewer palette colors first, then a lower frame rate, then smaller dimensions — and stops at the first step that fits under 512 KB. Files already under the limit come back untouched.
