The screen recording format problem
You record a demo in the browser, Discord or OBS and get a WebM file. Then the video editor rejects it, PowerPoint shows a black box and the iPhone refuses to play it. Why do my screen recordings come out as WebM?
Browser-based recorders, Discord clips and many screen capture tools save WebM because it is the web-native format. It plays fine in browsers but chokes in video editors, PowerPoint and on iPhones. MP4 with H.264 plays everywhere.
Does the conversion lose quality?
The video is re-encoded to H.264 at a quality level (CRF 23) that is visually transparent for screen recordings and most footage. Audio is carried over as AAC.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. FFmpeg runs inside your browser as WebAssembly. The file is read and written entirely on your device, which our automated tests verify by watching the network.
How long does it take?
Roughly real-time on a typical laptop: a 2-minute clip takes about 1 to 3 minutes. The engine loads once (about 32 MB) and is cached after that.
