Why do avatars want 512×512?

Will a rectangular photo be distorted?
Never. The tool center-crops to a square first, then scales to exactly 512×512. Faces stay round. If your subject sits off to one side, crop roughly square with the image cropper first — the square crop here keeps the middle of the frame, not the middle of your subject.
My source is smaller than 512×512. Should I still resize?
Only if the destination demands the exact size. Scaling a 300×300 image up to 512 invents pixels: the file grows and the picture gets softer, because no detail exists to fill the extra space. When a platform accepts smaller icons, upload the original.
What format should a 512×512 avatar be?
PNG when the icon has flat colour, text or transparency — it stays crisp and keeps the transparent background. JPG for a photograph, since it will be several times smaller at the same visible quality. WebP does both and is lighter still, but a few older upload forms reject it.
